Your differential isn't complicated. You've just been lied to about what it does.

That sounds made up. I know. But hear me out.

Every car with two drive wheels has to solve the same problem: the outside wheel travels farther than the inside wheel in a turn. If both wheels were locked together on a solid axle, one would skip, scrub, or snap. The differential lets them spin at different speeds while both still receive power. That's the entire job. Everything else — every acronym, every racing pedigree, every forum argument at 2 AM — is just different answers to the question "how fast and how smart?"

The open differential is the default answer. It sends power to the wheel with less resistance — which, in practice, means the wheel with less grip. This is why your friend's clapped Civic spins the inside tire pulling out of a parking lot. It's not broken. It's working exactly as Onésiphore Pecqueur intended in 1827 when he patented the first differential for steam-powered carts. Open diffs turn beautifully. They launch like a wet napkin.

The limited-slip differential was the first upgrade, and it's still the one that matters. Clutch-type LSDs use spring-loaded clutch packs that lock up progressively as wheel speed difference increases. More slip, more lock, more grip. They're predictable, adjustable, and they wear out. Every Miata owner has a relationship with their differential shop.

Viscous LSDs use silicone fluid that thickens when sheared. A stack of perforated plates spins inside a housing filled with this fluid, and as one wheel outruns the other, the fluid heats up, thickens, and resists the difference. Simple, cheap, slow to react. That half-second delay is why viscous diffs feel less precise. Subaru used them in the WRX for years. Nobody bragged about it.

Torsen differentials use worm gears instead of clutches or fluid. No wear items. No maintenance. Instant response. The name is a portmanteau of "torque-sensing," and that's exactly what it does: the worm gears bind against the housing under load, redirecting torque to the wheel with grip. The catch is that Torsens need resistance on both wheels to work. If one wheel lifts completely off the ground, the Torsen behaves like an open diff, sending all power to the airborne wheel. Off-roaders hate this. Track drivers love it because a wheel lifting on pavement means you've already crashed.

A locking differential is the nuclear option. It mechanically joins both wheels at the same speed, period. No slip, just two wheels turning in lockstep. Rock crawlers use lockers because when one wheel is in the air on a boulder field, you need the other one turning regardless. The downside: driving on pavement with a locked diff sounds like your axles are filing for divorce.

Torque vectoring is where mechanical gives way to electronic. It doesn't just limit slip — it actively overspeeds the outside wheel in a corner to rotate the car into the turn. The rear differential in a modern Focus RS or Audi RS3 has electric motors, clutch packs, and control units that can send more torque to one wheel than the other, faster than you can process the steering angle change that triggered it. The car isn't reacting to slip. It's preventing it before the tire breaks traction. The Rivian R1T does this with four motors — one per wheel — and zero mechanical diffs. The entire differential concept replaced by software and power electronics.

Four types. Open, limited-slip, locking, torque vectoring. One job — let wheels spin at different speeds. Everything else is just how much money and compute power you're willing to throw at the problem Pecqueur solved with gears and oil in 1827.
