The Most Advanced 90s Japanese Sports Car Wasn't the Supra

The Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 had active aerodynamics, four-wheel steering, electronically controlled suspension, and a twin-turbo V6 in 1991. The Supra had... a big wing.

I'm not saying the Supra is overrated. I'm saying the 3000GT was doing things in 1991 that wouldn't show up on European supercars for another decade, and nobody noticed.

Active aero. In 1991. The 3000GT VR-4 had a front air dam and rear spoiler that adjusted themselves based on vehicle speed — the front lip dropped at 50 mph to reduce lift, the rear wing changed angle. This wasn't a cosmetic gimmick. Mitsubishi's wind tunnel data showed a measurable reduction in front-end lift at speed, which mattered because the car weighed 3,800 pounds and needed all the high-speed stability it could get.

Four-wheel steering. Honda's Prelude had it and Mazda used it on the 626, but the 3000GT's system was speed-sensitive: at low speeds, the rear wheels turned opposite the fronts to tighten the turning circle (the car had a 36-foot turning radius, impressive for something the size of a small aircraft carrier). At high speeds, they turned in phase with the fronts for stability during lane changes. Mitsubishi called it Active 4WS. The engineering was legit — an electronic control unit processed speed, steering angle, and steering rate to calculate the optimal rear-steer angle in real time.

Then there's the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6: 300 horsepower and 307 lb-ft of torque in 1991. The same-year NSX made 270. The same-year 911 Turbo made 315 and cost almost twice as much. The 3000GT launched to 60 in 5.2 seconds, a number that embarrassed Corvettes and gave Porsche engineers something to stare at during meetings. It had all-wheel drive, a Getrag six-speed manual (rare in 1991), and a top speed of 156 mph — electronically limited because Mitsubishi cared about tire ratings more than bragging rights.

The problem was the weight. 3,800 pounds is not a sports car weight. It's a luxury coupe weight with a sports car's ambitions. The active systems — the aero, the steering, the adjustable dampers, the active exhaust — added complexity that added mass that blunted the driving experience. Every journalist who drove one praised the technology and complained about the feel. The steering was quick but numb. The ride was compliant but disconnected. The VR-4 was a technocratic masterpiece that forgot to be fun.

The Supra, by comparison, was simple. Big engine, rear-wheel drive, manual transmission, go. The aftermarket loved it. Tuners loved it. The Fast and the Furious immortalized it. The 3000GT got a supporting role in a Jackie Chan movie and a reputation for being impossible to work on. Changing spark plugs required removing the intake manifold. The twin turbos were buried. Mechanics charged by the hour and laughed at your pain.

But the 3000GT VR-4 was the more advanced car — objectively, measurably, on paper and on the skidpad. Mitsubishi threw every piece of technology they had at a single platform and created something that BMW and Mercedes wouldn't match for years. They just forgot to make it light enough to dance, simple enough to modify, and reliable enough to survive its own ambition. The Supra won the culture. The 3000GT won the spec sheet.
