The most advanced Japanese sports car of the 90s wasn't the Supra.
That sounds made up. I know. But hear me out.
In 1990, Toyota was still figuring out how to put a turbo on the Supra. Nissan hadn't yet written the GT-R's legend. Honda was busy making the NSX light.
And Mitsubishi shipped a production car with active aerodynamics, all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, adaptive suspension, and a twin-turbo V6.
In 1990.
The 3000GT VR-4 — sold as the GTO in Japan — didn't just have a spec sheet. It had a spec manifesto. Mitsubishi threw every piece of technology they had at this car and dared the industry to catch up.
Nobody did. At least not in one car.
## The Specs That Should've Changed Everything
The front splitter and rear spoiler moved. Not fixed-position "aero" — actually articulated. The front air dam dropped at 50 mph. The rear wing adjusted angle based on speed. Active aero on a production street car in 1990. The Bugatti Veyron didn't get active aero until 2005. Fifteen years later.
All-wheel drive. Not "slips then engages" AWD — full-time, viscous-coupling center differential. Same year the GT-R arrived with ATTESA, the VR-4 had its own system routing power where the grip was.
Four-wheel steering. The rear wheels turned up to 1.5 degrees in phase with the fronts at speed — stability at triple digits. At low speed, they turned opposite — tighter parking lot turns in a 3,800-pound coupe.
Electronically controlled suspension. Tour or Sport. Not "firmer" — actually changing damping rates based on road conditions and driving style. In 1990, most sports cars had two settings: stiff and stiffer.
The engine: a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. 300 horsepower. 307 pound-feet of torque. Five-speed manual from Getrag. 0-60 in 5.2 seconds.
For context: the 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 made 247 horsepower. The Corvette ZR-1 made 375 — but cost twice as much. The 3000GT VR-4 cost $31,000. The ZR-1 was $59,000.
## What Everyone Remembers Instead
The MKIV Supra arrived in 1993 with the 2JZ — an engine that would become legendary for making 1,000 horsepower on stock internals. The aftermarket exploded. Fast and Furious happened. The Supra became a cultural icon.
The R32 GT-R was busy dominating Group A racing in Japan, earning "Godzilla" from the Australian press. Motorsport pedigree that translated directly to showroom credibility.
The NSX proved you could build a mid-engine supercar that started every morning. Senna helped tune the suspension.
The RX-7 FD was the lightest, purest sports car of the bunch — and arguably the most beautiful.
All four of those cars have multi-page Wikipedia entries, thriving aftermarket support, and six-figure auction prices.
The 3000GT VR-4? It became a footnote.
## Why History Forgot It
Weight. The VR-4 was 3,800 pounds. In an era when the RX-7 weighed 2,800, the NSX was 3,000, and even the Supra Turbo came in at 3,400, the Mitsubishi was the heavy kid. "Too many computers" was the complaint. Car journalists in the 90s wanted purity — manual steering, no assists, lightweight. The VR-4 was the opposite of that philosophy.
Complexity. Active aero, active exhaust, electronic suspension, four-wheel steering, all-wheel drive, twin turbos with intercoolers. When things broke — and they did break — repairs were expensive and parts were scarce. The aftermarket never embraced the 6G72 engine the way it embraced the 2JZ or RB26. You couldn't just bolt on a bigger turbo and make 800 horsepower.
Mitsubishi itself. The company spent the next two decades becoming the Eclipse Cross company. They killed the Lancer Evolution in 2016. Their motorsport program faded. There was no halo car to keep the 3000GT's legacy alive. Toyota had the Supra and the GR lineup. Nissan had the GT-R. Honda had the NSX and Type R. Mitsubishi had... the Mirage.
## Why It Still Matters
Mitsubishi wasn't trying to build the fastest car. They were trying to build the most capable car. The one that could do everything — cruise at 150 mph with the aero deployed, carve a canyon road with the suspension in Sport, park at a restaurant without doing a five-point turn.
That philosophy — technology serving capability, not just lap times — is exactly where the industry is now. Every modern supercar has active aero. Adaptive suspension is standard on sports sedans. All-wheel drive and torque vectoring are table stakes. The 3000GT was doing it in 1990 while everyone else was still arguing about double wishbones.
The Supra is the answer everyone gives. The GT-R is the answer motorsport fans give. The NSX is the answer the refined give.
But the real answer — the most advanced Japanese sports car of the 90s — is the one that tried everything first, even if history forgot its name.
